President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20).
Tinubu landed at 11:03 p.m. local time on Sunday (3:03 a.m. Nigerian time on Monday) and was received by Ambassador Breno Costa of Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations.
Accompanying the president is a high-level Nigerian delegation, including Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Idi Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development; Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity; Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security; and Amb. Mohammed Mohammed, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.
During the summit, President Tinubu is set to engage in key bilateral discussions aimed at supporting Nigeria’s ongoing socio-economic reforms.
The G20 summit, hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, will focus on the theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” Key topics of discussion will include sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental sectors, global governance reforms, climate change, and the digital economy.
The Brazilian presidency has also spotlighted global issues such as the Israel–Hamas conflict and rising geopolitical tensions, particularly between the US and China. The outcomes of these discussions will form the basis for global agreements.
The G20 consists of 19 member countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the UK, and the US, in addition to the European Union.
The African Union and European Union have also been invited to attend, with Nigeria’s participation reflecting President Da Silva’s commitment to addressing food security and eradicating extreme poverty by 2030.
The summit, which runs from November 18 to 19, will conclude with leaders agreeing on critical strategies to address global challenges.
