Chukwudi Ezeobika, a human rights activist and lawyer, has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what he perceives as a lack of due diligence in thoroughly investigating the information and certificates submitted by individuals aspiring for public office.
Expressing his concerns, Ezeobika pointed out that INEC’s actions or inactions have subjected the country to international ridicule, especially in light of the scrutiny faced by the President’s certificate. He emphasized that this casts doubt on the country’s leadership’s integrity.
He made the observations in a statement signed by the lawyer and shared with the media in Lokoja on Monday.
Ezeobika specifically referenced the controversy surrounding the Chicago State University certificate, underscoring that INEC’s failure to act appropriately has brought significant embarrassment to the entire nation.
He said, “This is an issue to be worried about as it raises serious questions on the integrity, capacity, and true independence of the Commission as currently constituted.”
Ezeobika highlighted that given the substantial financial resources allocated to INEC, both from the Nigerian government and international donors, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, the INEC Chairman, should have taken the necessary steps to ensure the conduct of a free, fair, and credible election.
