Tinubu govt moves to stop nationwide strike amid hardship in Nigeria

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to preventing a nationwide strike, countering an earlier declaration by labour unions.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had previously announced their intention to embark on a nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demands.

However, the government has announced that a palliative package for workers will be unveiled by President Bola Tinubu during the customary presidential speech commemorating Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour, Olajide Oshundun, stated that a crucial meeting scheduled for Tuesday will revolve around the announcements made by President Tinubu during his Independence Day broadcast.

He reassured the public, stating, “We are taking steps to prevent the strike. We are aware of their plans, and they can be assured that President Tinubu will address the concerns of Nigerian workers in his October 1 speech.”

Oshundun added, “The ministry is actively working to fulfill the second aspect of their demands, specifically regarding wage awards. We have already made progress by securing the release of the factional chairman of the NURTW. We plan to invite the unions on Tuesday after the President’s address to discuss reasons for calling off the proposed strike.”
