President Bola Tinubu is holding talks with the newly appointed sole administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas (Rtd), at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday afternoon.
Vice Admiral Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, arrived at the State House around 12:50 PM for the meeting, which follows Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration on the oil-rich state due to prolonged political and security crises.
On Tuesday night, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing a political crisis that has disrupted governance and threatened security.
As part of the emergency measures, the president suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
In their place, Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibas as sole administrator to oversee governance in the state. However, his mandate does not include enacting new laws.
The president also emphasized that despite the state of emergency, the judiciary in Rivers State would continue to function independently.
