Tinubu returns from AU meeting in Ghana

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja from Accra, Ghana, where he attended the 6th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU).

Tinubu, who arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at approximately 10 PM on Sunday, was greeted by senior government officials.

During his stay in Ghana, President Tinubu, serving as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), provided updates on the organization’s regional developments.

In his address at the meeting, Tinubu highlighted both the achievements and challenges faced by ECOWAS. He showcased progress in areas such as counter-terrorism, electoral support, economic integration, humanitarian efforts, education, health, energy, mines, and agriculture.

Tinubu noted the activation of a Standby Force to combat terrorism, support for member states in enhancing electoral and governance processes, and efforts to consolidate the free trade area, customs union, and common market.

He also emphasized ECOWAS’ humanitarian initiatives, including a $9 million allocation to assist persons of concern and support for frontline member states in the fight against terrorism.

Despite these achievements, President Tinubu acknowledged several challenges facing the bloc, including multiple threats, geopolitical rivalries, terrorism, food insecurity, climate change, and misinformation.

He reiterated ECOWAS’ commitment to dialogue with member states, maintaining unity, and convening a Special Extra-ordinary Summit on the future of the Community.

On the sidelines of the meeting, President Tinubu held a bilateral discussion with President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, where they agreed to continue working together to advance their bilateral interests.
