NLC Protest: President Bola Tinubu Cites Personal Cost-Cutting Measures

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, revealed that President Bola Tinubu shared insights with labor union leaders during a meeting, highlighting his personal endeavors to curtail government expenses. Tinubu purportedly mentioned residing in a two-bedroom apartment as a part of his cost-reduction efforts.

Ajaero made this revelation during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

The context for this disclosure was a dialogue between organized labor and President Tinubu regarding the escalating cost of governance. The labor union had expressed concerns about the proliferation of government appointments, which in turn lead to further appointments, ultimately bloating the cost of governance.

Ajaero recounted the discussion, stating, “During our meeting with the president, we complained about the high cost of governance. We told him that when he appoints ministers, they will appoint SSAs. And the SSAs will also appoint SSAs. But the president said that the labor should look at it from the point of job creation. But we did not agree with that.”

Tinubu, in response, cited personal examples of his efforts to minimize expenditure. He shared that despite his fleet of cars, he had taken steps to reduce it and was met with the rationale that it posed a security concern. Similarly, he expressed a preference for using his private jet, only to be advised that security dictated the use of the government jet.

The most striking revelation was Tinubu’s mention of residing in a two-bedroom flat as part of his commitment to fiscal discipline. “That he’s trying as much as possible to tighten his belt and he will try as much as possible to talk to his people working with him. So, I don’t know what that means,” Ajaero added.

This disclosure came in the wake of the NLC’s nationwide protest against the removal of petrol subsidy, which was subsequently called off following the meeting with President Tinubu.
