President Bola Tinubu has warned Nigeria’s Regional Development Commissions against spending public funds on poorly planned projects.

He gave the warning on Monday at the first North Central Stakeholders Development Summit in Abuja.

The North Central Development Commission NCDC organised the summit. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, represented Tinubu at the event.

Tinubu urged the commissions to focus on projects with clear goals, adequate funding and measurable benefits for communities.

He said the commissions must not become channels for wasting public resources.

“The era of white elephant projects is over, and there is no excuse for the Commissions to become another conduit for wasting public funds,” Tinubu said.

The President also warned against corruption and political interference. He urged the commissions to avoid marginalisation and ethnic considerations when selecting projects.

Furthermore, Tinubu said authorities would sanction officials who violate the rules.

Tinubu orders prompt release of funds

Tinubu directed the Federal Government to release funds meant for the development commissions without delay.

He also pledged continued political and financial support for the NCDC and other regional commissions.

According to him, the government will support projects that can boost Nigeria’s economic and industrial potential.

However, he urged the commissions to seek additional funding outside government allocations.

He advised them to attract private investment, development finance and donor support.

Tinubu said the commissions operate under the Renewed Hope Agenda. He added that they should help close development gaps and create more economic opportunities across Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Tinubu identified agriculture and agro-processing as major priorities for the North Central region.

He also listed solid minerals, industrialisation, security, education and healthcare among key areas requiring attention.

The President urged stakeholders to produce a practical blueprint for the region’s long-term development.

The summit is considering a 20-year plan covering economic, infrastructure and social development in the North Central region.

The event carries the theme: “The Great Leap Forward: A 20-Year Economic, Infrastructural and Social Development Plan for the North Central Region.”
