She served as the Special Adviser to Governor Benedict Ayade on community and primary health care, making her the youngest in the country to hold such a position. Subsequently, she became the pioneer Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Agency. In 2019, she was appointed as the Cross River State Commissioner for Health, a role she embraced amid controversies.

In her role as the Commissioner of Health, Betta Edu chaired the Cross River State COVID-19 Taskforce. She played a crucial role in coordinating the state’s response to the pandemic, establishing and managing the Emergency Operations Centre for COVID-19. Her efforts earned her recognition and respect, culminating in her appointment as the National Chairman of the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum in August 2020.

Despite her remarkable achievements, Betta Edu’s political career has not been without controversy. She faced disqualification in her bid for the National Women Leader position of the APC due to electoral regulations. Additionally, she was accused of posting fake photos of ventilators during the COVID-19 crisis in 2020, leading to a vote of no confidence from the Cross River state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association. However, she maintains that the vote of no confidence was politically motivated.
