Tiv accent controversy: What Avese Nyikwagh should know

Dear Avese Nyikwagh,

I hope this message finds you well. I recently came across your post on Facebook (which as since gone viral) regarding local content creators in Benue State, particularly Tiv comedians, and I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts with you.

First and foremost, I want to acknowledge your right to express your opinions, as it’s an essential aspect of our freedom of speech.

However, I also believe it’s crucial to celebrate and appreciate the rich diversity of our country, Nigeria. Our nation is blessed with numerous ethnic groups, each with its unique culture, language, and identity.

You mentioned your frustration with Tiv comedians and their portrayal of the Tiv accent in comedy skits.

While it’s understandable that homour is subjective and not everyone may share the same taste in comedy, it’s important to remember that comedy often draws from cultural elements, including language and accents.

Tiv, as you rightly mentioned, is the fourth largest ethnic group in Nigeria. Their culture and language are an integral part of our national identity.

Just as other ethnic groups take pride in their languages and accents, the Tiv people have every right to do the same.

In the world of entertainment, embracing one’s cultural identity, including speaking in one’s local dialect or accent, has proven to be a successful and endearing approach. Let me share a few examples of entertainers who have risen to fame by staying true to their roots:

Funke Akindele: Funke Akindele, a Yoruba actress, is known for her outstanding performances in Yoruba movies. Her ability to infuse humour and authenticity into her roles has earned her international recognition.

Falz: Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, actor, and comedian. He gained widespread recognition for his humorous music videos and performances delivered in a Nigerian Pidgin and Yoruba blend.

These examples highlight how staying true to one’s cultural roots, including language and accents, can be a powerful and endearing way to connect with an audience. It’s about celebrating our uniqueness and promoting cultural heritage.

Avese, I encourage you to embrace the rich diversity of our country and appreciate the beauty of each ethnic group’s culture, including their accents and dialects. Our differences are what make Nigeria a vibrant and extraordinary nation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I hope it encourages you to view local content creators and their expressions in a new light. Let’s continue to celebrate the tapestry of cultures that make up our beloved Nigeria.

Warm regards,

[Ameh Comrade Godwin]
