The highest-ranked footballers in ESPN’s list of the top 100 athletes of the 21st century have been revealed.
Argentina and Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi is the highest-ranked footballer, securing the third position. Swimmer Michael Phelps holds the top spot on the list.
Messi’s long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the next footballer on the list, coming in at 13th place and missing out on the top 10.
Other notable footballers such as Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, Ronaldinho, and Luka Modric did not make it into the top five ranked footballers.
Brazil’s Marta is the highest-ranked women’s footballer, placed at 32nd, while Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is at 48th. Barcelona women’s star Aitana Bonmatí follows closely behind Henry at 49th.
Zidane is ranked 50th, Modric is 55th, and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé is 65th. Surprisingly, Ronaldo Nazario is ranked 87th.
