Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Monday, 24th March, 2025

Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the IDOMA VOICE News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Monday, 24th March 2025

  1. The Presidency has strongly defended the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that the move was necessary to prevent the state from plunging into chaos. According to Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, intelligence reports indicated that militants were planning to sabotage vital oil infrastructure, posing a significant threat to Nigeria’s economy. The Presidency dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu’s intervention was a power grab, arguing that decisive action was needed before governance collapsed.

  2. The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional. PDP BoT Chairman Adolphus Wabara criticized the National Assembly for approving the measure through a voice vote rather than the required two-thirds majority. The opposition party insists that the emergency rule, which led to the suspension of Fubara and other elected officials, is a dangerous overreach and must be reversed.

  3. Segun Showunmi, a former PDP governorship aspirant in Ogun State, has blamed the party’s internal crisis on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike. He claimed that their prolonged political feud has weakened the PDP and could lead to its downfall. The party remains divided over who holds the position of national secretary, despite a Supreme Court ruling, with both Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye laying claim to the office.

  4. Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was seen publicly for the first time since his suspension, attending a church service at Salvation Ministries in Port Harcourt. His appearance alongside his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, comes amid rumors that he had fled to Bayelsa State following his removal from office. The political tension in Rivers remains high, as his supporters continue to reject the state of emergency imposed by the federal government.

  5. Demola Olarewaju, an aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has likened President Tinubu’s actions in Rivers State to those of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. However, he argued that while Obasanjo successfully removed governors due to the country’s weaker democracy and slower news cycle at the time, Tinubu’s move will likely backfire in today’s political climate. He criticized the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) as Rivers’ Sole Administrator, calling it a dangerous precedent.

  6. Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has expressed deep skepticism about the Tinubu-led administration, stating that it was created to serve the interests of a few selfish politicians rather than the Nigerian people. He argued that only Nigerians who voted for the All Progressives Congress (APC) can assess the current situation, noting that the country has continued to struggle under its leadership. He urged citizens to take responsibility for their choices at the ballot box.

  7. A yet-to-be-identified police inspector allegedly opened fire on civilians at Watt Market in Calabar, Cross River State, killing and injuring several people. According to reports, the officer walked out of a nearby police station with a cocked gun and began shooting indiscriminately. While the Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the incident, it has not disclosed the officer’s identity or the number of casualties. The suspect has since been arrested and is in custody.

  8. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has cautioned officers against unlawful detentions, emphasizing the importance of respecting citizens’ rights. In a statement released by Force Spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP reiterated that prolonged and unjustified detentions violate Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution. He warned that such practices could erode public trust in the police and called for strict adherence to legal detention procedures.

  9. Former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung has revealed that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is holding discussions with key political figures—including former ministers and senators—about allying against the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 elections. Dalung stated that Nigeria’s democracy has stagnated under both PDP and APC rule, and his party aims to provide a viable alternative focused on justice, equity, and poverty eradication.

  10. Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has tipped Remo Stars to win the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title this season. The Ikenne-based club currently leads the league table with 57 points, eight points ahead of second-placed Rivers United. Having finished as runners-up in the last two seasons, Remo Stars now have a strong chance to secure their first NPFL title with just 11 matches left in the season.
