Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the IDOMA VOICE News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today,  Thursday, 27th 2025

  1. The Presidency has reaffirmed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State was only suspended, not removed, and dismissed claims by Peter Obi that democracy under Tinubu’s administration has collapsed. Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Olusegun Dada, described Obi as a “hypocrite and dangerously mischievous”, criticizing him for allegedly misrepresenting the situation.

  2. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has admitted that he is undecided on whether to run for president in 2027 against Bola Tinubu. Speaking in an interview for Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, Atiku emphasized that a strong opposition coalition must first be established before any decision can be made. He acknowledged growing speculation over potential candidates, including Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai.

  3. The newly appointed Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, has announced the suspension of all political officeholders, including the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), commissioners, and special advisers. This move follows the State of Emergency declared by President Tinubu, giving Ibas full administrative control of the state. Affected officials have been instructed to hand over to permanent secretaries or senior directors in their ministries and agencies.

  4. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that petitioners seeking the recall of Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan have now met all legal requirements, including providing their telephone numbers and email addresses. The commission will now verify whether more than half of the registered voters in her constituency signed the petition before moving forward. A notice has also been sent to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

  5. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has vowed to work against Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition in 2027, just as he did in 2023. Wike, who played a key role in ensuring Atiku lost Rivers State to Bola Tinubu, dismissed claims that he regretted not being selected as Atiku’s running mate. According to Wike, Atiku will “fail again” if he attempts another presidential run.

  6. After months of delay, NYSC members have started receiving their newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance. The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, had recently assured corps members that payments would be processed before the end of March. The increase had been stalled due to budgetary constraints and bureaucratic delays, but has now been resolved.

  7. The Federal Government has declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration. Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, congratulated Muslims on the completion of Ramadan and urged Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in the country.

  8. Nollywood actress Lilian Afegbai has expressed her disbelief after being asked to pay $1,200 (about ₦1.8 million) for a friend’s wedding aso-ebi in Lagos. In a post on her Instagram page, she criticized the increasing commercialization of Nigerian weddings, questioning why aso-ebi is now being priced in dollars instead of naira.

  9. Reports suggest that legendary Nigerian singer 2Baba (Innocent Idibia) is planning to marry Natasha Osawaru, following his separation from Annie Idibia. However, insiders claim that 2Baba’s mother is strongly opposed to the relationship and has vowed not to give her blessing. Despite family concerns, the singer is said to be determined to go ahead with the union, with speculations that a traditional wedding may happen before the end of the year.

  10. Nigerian footballer Ola Aina has reassured fans that the Super Eagles will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite their poor performance in the qualifiers so far. After a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe, Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C, trailing leaders South Africa by six points. However, Aina remains optimistic, urging supporters to “chill”, as the team is determined to bounce back.
