Prof. James Ayatse, the Tor Tiv in Benue, has assumed office as the 10th substantive University of Benin (UNIBEN) Chancellor.
The monarch succeeds the deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor.
Ayatse was installed on Monday at the launch of a book to mark UNIBEN’s Golden Jubilee, postponed in 2020 because of COVID-19.
He announced prize for best well-behaved student from the 2022 academic session.
The Tor Tiv commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the Visitor, for finding him fit for the position.
The king described the assignment as “a familiar terrain” and promised to work with the management to make university more enviable.
“I am not unaware of the oblivious challenges confronting public universities in Nigeria. I assure that I will use my influence to take UNIBEN to greater heights”, he said.
Prof. Lilaini Salami, the Vice Chancellor, expressed confidence that the chancellor would further lift the school.
