Tragedy:Austin Umerah shoots wife, kills self in Kaduna

Austin Umerah, a former lecturer at the Kaduna Polytechnic, has shot himself.

The incident happened on Thursday at his Kigo road residence in Kaduna.

Umerah, a retired lecturer, was also said to have shot his wife, Maurine, before shooting himself.

The wife, a part-time lecturer at the Department of Languages, Kaduna State University (KASU), was said to have been rushed to the 44 Nigerian Army Referral Hospital, Kaduna, for treatment.

Umerah’s corpse has been deposited at the Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital, Kaduna.

Mohammed Jalige, spokesman of the Kaduna state police command, confirmed the incident.

Jalige, however, said the command was yet to ascertain the rationale behind the action of the former lecturer, as investigation is ongoing.

“Yes, the man shot his wife and shot himself to death. We are still investigating the issue. The wife is at 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital where she is receiving treatment,” Jalige said in a telephone interview.

“The incident happened in Kigo road, Kaduna, and the corpse of the man has been deposited at the Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital.”
