Troops repel attack in Benue, kill several terrorists, lose one soldier

Troops under Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have successfully foiled an attack by suspected terrorists in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, eliminating several of the assailants during the confrontation.

According to sources, the incident took place around 1:00 p.m. on March 27 near Iyarwya waterside, after troops from Sector 1 acted on intelligence regarding the movement of suspected terrorists.

The sources revealed that the soldiers engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire, resulting in multiple casualties among the terrorists and forcing them to retreat at the initial stage.

“Troops pursued the fleeing terrorists across the river, where they came under ambush,” the source said.

The source further noted that one soldier lost his life in the line of duty, while another sustained gunshot injuries during the encounter.

It was gathered that the wounded soldier has been taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Makurdi for medical attention, while the body of the fallen soldier has been deposited in the mortuary.
