U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed the immediate closure of the federal Department of Education.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump expressed his desire to shut it down, labeling the department as a “big con job.”
Last week, Trump announced his intention to close the Department of Education through an executive order. However, he acknowledged the need for support from Congress and teachers’ unions to fulfill this campaign promise.
Reuters reports that closing the Education Department could disrupt tens of billions of dollars in funding for K-12 schools and college tuition assistance.
In his early days in office, Trump pushed for sweeping changes across the U.S. government, demanding that federal employees return to in-person work or resign. He has also sought cost reductions and job cuts, aiming to eliminate agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development.
