Trump designates Nigeria ‘Country of Particular Concern’ amid Christian genocide claims
Former U.S. President Donald J. Trump has designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), citing what he described as the “mass slaughter” of Christians by radical Islamist groups.
In a statement issued on Friday, Trump warned that Christianity faces an “existential threat” in Nigeria, where thousands of Christians have reportedly been killed in recent years.
“Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern,’” Trump declared.
“When Christians or any group are being killed as they are in Nigeria 3,100 compared to 4,476 worldwide something must be done.”
Trump also directed Congressman Riley Moore, Chairman Tom Cole, and the U.S. House Appropriations Committee to investigate the ongoing violence and propose urgent measures.
“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are taking place in Nigeria and elsewhere,” Trump said, pledging continued support to protect “our great Christian population around the world.”
The CPC designation, typically issued by the U.S. State Department, is reserved for countries accused of severe violations of religious freedom. Nigeria was previously included on the list in 2020 but was removed in 2021.
Trump’s renewed declaration has once again drawn global attention to the issue of religious violence and insecurity in Africa’s most populous nation.
