Two ATBU students charged for housebreaking, theft

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two students from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) on charges of criminal conspiracy, housebreaking and theft.

In a statement released on Friday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Mohammed Wakil, it was revealed that on September 26, 2024, at around 10:00 AM, an anonymous tip was received at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Yelwa. The report indicated that a group of students had assaulted two fellow students: Bamusa Mohammed Bako, a 25-year-old fourth-year student in Urban and Regional Planning, and Yusuf Umar, also known as Danfari, a 28-year-old fifth-year student in Industrial Design, both from ATBU’s Yelwa Campus.

The statement further disclosed that upon receiving the report, a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Yelwa was immediately dispatched to the scene to rescue the victims and initiate an investigation.

Preliminary findings revealed that the suspects had conspired and, at approximately 3:00 AM that same day, broke into the residence of Raji Rabi’u, a 28-year-old fourth-year student in Estate Management at ATBU, Bauchi.

They reportedly stole several items, including a 32-inch Hisense TV, a DSTV decoder, a woofer, a speaker, a pair of shoes, a blanket, and a prayer mat.

Wakil noted that the suspects are currently under investigation and have allegedly confessed, stating that the stolen items were intended to finance their final-year project defense.

“They will be charged in court once the preliminary inquiry is concluded,” Wakil added.
