Two Japan Airlines planes collide at Haneda Airport

On Thursday morning, the wingtips of two Japan Airlines (JAL) passenger planes collided at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, according to local media reports. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time, as confirmed by JAL.

Both aircraft sustained damage, but fortunately, no injuries were reported, public broadcaster NHK stated.

The collision involved JAL Flight 503, which was scheduled to depart for Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport. The plane was backing out of its parking spot when it struck another plane that was moving forward into an adjacent parking spot.

Flight 503, carrying 328 people, was subsequently cancelled. The other aircraft, which had no passengers on board, experienced a flight delay as it required a plane change.

This incident is the latest in a series of recent airfield collisions. Previously, a JAL passenger jet collided with a Japan Coast Guard plane at Haneda Airport on January 2, resulting in the deaths of five out of six crew members on the Coast Guard plane. Additionally, a Korean Air aircraft clipped a parked Cathay Pacific plane at New Chitose Airport on January 16, and two All Nippon Airways passenger jets bumped wings at an Osaka airport on February 1.
