Benue State Police Command has confirmed that two of its officers were shot and killed during an operation Thursday morning.
The incident happened on Makurdi-Lafia Road near Yelewata.
It was gathered that the policemen were on their way to arrest some bandits who were operating along the busy Makurdi- Lafia Road.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, Kate Anene, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the killing of two policemen and said the investigation had commenced.
Meanwhile, on the same night, three other persons including a lecturer with the Federal University, Wukari, were said to have been killed by armed bandits at Jootar, Mbaterem, in Mbayenge Council Ward, the Ukum Local Government Area, of the state.
The three deceased, all friends, were said to have sat at a drinking joint close to a Federal Quarantine CheckPoint in the community at about 7pm when the unknown gunmen stormed the border town, shot them point-blank killing them on the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers; two young men and a lady who had ridden on a Bajaj Motorcycle came carrying a lady and two guys, one of them pointed a gun at their targets, shot and killed them after which he jumped back on the motorcycle and they rode away unchallenged.
Police spokesperson, Kate Anene, said she was yet to get the information from Ukum Local Government Area.
