Julie Ertz, a versatile midfielder and defender who played an instrumental role in propelling the United States to victory in the Women’s World Cup of 2015 and 2019, declared her retirement from professional soccer on Thursday.
The 31-year-old American athlete, who married NFL tight end Zach Ertz in 2017 and welcomed her child in August 2022, showcased her adaptability as a center back during the 2015 championship in Canada and later shone as a standout midfielder in France four years thereafter.
Following a determined comeback from a severe knee injury and contributing to the US women’s team capturing a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Ertz encountered an 18-month hiatus due to injuries and the arrival of her son.
“I gave everything I had to the sport that I love,” Ertz said in a statement. “With that I can walk away with no regrets because while I gave soccer every ounce of myself, soccer gave me even more, and for that I’ll always be thankful.”
Her return to the pitch occurred in this year’s Women’s World Cup, where she exhibited her dedication by playing every minute of all four matches until the defending champions faced elimination.
Reflecting on her decision, Ertz expressed, “Over the past few months, my heart has been overflowing with gratitude as I’ve reflected on the remarkable experiences that soccer has granted me.”
Having initiated her journey with the US national team in 2013, Ertz notched 20 goals in 122 appearances over the course of a decade, remarkably starting all 17 of her World Cup matches. Her presence on the field saw the United States secure victories in 100 matches, while drawing 17 and suffering just five losses.
At the club level, Ertz made her mark during eight seasons with the Chicago Red Stars, clinching the title of the National Women’s Soccer League’s 2014 Rookie of the Year. Following a break in 2022, she returned to action with Angel City FC this year ahead of the World Cup.
