The Nigerian Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Network’s 6th annual National Conference, themed “Beyond Limits: Innovation for Sustainable Development,” reached a successful conclusion under the auspices of the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
Bringing together over 400 young leaders aged 18 to 35 from all 36 Nigerian states, the two-day event fostered collaboration and advanced sustainable development across the nation. The conference featured keynote speakers, panel discussions, and interactive sessions aimed at enlightening participants about their role in driving sustainable progress.
Notably, five YALI Network members received immediate job offers during the event, and HP generously awarded eight laptops to the victors of a business pitch competition.
The YALI Network National Conference further cemented the strong partnership between the United States and Nigeria in their mutual endeavors to bolster youth empowerment and sustainable development.
According to the U.S. Mission, initiatives like YALI underscore the U.S. government’s commitment to nurturing the potential of young African leaders who are actively effecting positive change in their communities.
Supporting Youth Initiatives
U.S. Embassy’s Public Diplomacy Officer, Julia McKay, delivered a keynote address highlighting the U.S. government’s support for youth initiatives geared towards achieving sustainable economies and inclusive communities in Nigeria.
McKay emphasized that nations with gender parity and inclusivity tend to experience greater economic growth, reduced conflict, and higher literacy rates.
She noted:
“Our dedication to inclusivity is reflected in initiatives like YALI Stands for All, the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), and the Tech Women and Tech Girls’ exchange program.”
She continued:
“These examples showcase our collaboration with Nigerian partners to advance shared goals and interests, recognizing the pivotal role of young individuals like you in Nigeria’s future. We will persist in offering opportunities such as the YALI Network to equip young Nigerians with the skills and networks required to drive change in their communities.”
McKay highlighted that the Mission provides online courses and resources to the YALI Network, boasting over 200,000 members across Nigeria and Africa. The initiative connects members with global leaders in various fields, facilitating leadership development through speaker programs and conference sponsorship.
Additionally, she discussed the forthcoming Mandela Washington Fellowship:
“The U.S. Embassy wishes to emphasize that the application period for the 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship opened on August 15 and will conclude on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. The fellowship is accessible to all Nigerians aged 25 to 35 who are passionate about fostering positive change and development in their communities.”
