UK student dependent visa: Eligibility criteria, application process

The UK student dependent visa, also known as the Tier 4 Dependant Visa, allows the dependents of a student (main applicant) to join them in the UK during their studies. To be eligible for a UK student dependent visa, you must be the spouse, partner, or child (under 18 years old) of the main student visa holder.

Here are the key points to know about the UK student dependent visa:

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Relationship with the Main Applicant: You must be the spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, or child (under 18) of the main applicant who is on a Tier 4 student visa.

  2. Financial Requirements: As a dependent, you need to demonstrate that you can financially support yourself in the UK without relying on public funds. This may require providing bank statements or financial sponsorship letters.

Application Process:

  1. Apply Online: The application for a UK student dependent visa is usually made online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) website.

  2. Required Documents: The specific documents required may vary based on individual circumstances, but typically, you will need:

    • Valid passport
    • Proof of your relationship with the main applicant (marriage certificate, civil partnership certificate, etc.)
    • Proof of the main applicant’s student status (CAS – Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)
    • Proof of financial ability to support yourself and any dependent children (bank statements, sponsorship letter, etc.)
    • Tuberculosis (TB) test results if applicable (depending on your nationality)
  3. Biometric Appointment: You and any dependent children over 18 years old may need to attend a biometric appointment at a local visa application center to provide fingerprints and photographs.

  4. Visa Fee: Pay the application fee, which may vary depending on your location and nationality.

  5. Decision Time: After submitting your application and attending the biometric appointment (if required), you’ll need to wait for a decision. Processing times can vary, so check for updates on the UKVI website.

Benefits and Restrictions:

As a UK student dependent visa holder, you are allowed to stay in the UK for the same duration as the main applicant’s student visa. You can work in the UK (with some restrictions) and also study, but you cannot access public funds during your stay.

It’s important to note that the application process and requirements may change, so always refer to the official UK government website or consult with the British embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date and accurate information before applying for a UK student dependent visa.
