The Chief Safety Officer of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has confirmed that an investigation is underway following the death of a student who reportedly jumped from a three-storey building under the influence of a suspected hard drug.

The tragic incident occurred late Thursday at a private student lodge near Royal Kitchen Junction in Ifite-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area.

According to eyewitnesses, the male student, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, allegedly consumed a substance suspected to be “mkpurummiri” (crystal meth) before leaping from the building’s balcony. Efforts to resuscitate him failed, and he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital where he was rushed for treatment.

One resident said, “We heard a heavy thud and ran outside, only to find the young man lying in a pool of blood. It was a shocking scene.”

Sources revealed that the deceased’s roommate was also found in an incoherent state, allegedly under the influence of the same substance. He is currently in custody and will be interrogated once he regains stability.

Commenting on the development, UNIZIK’s Chief Safety Officer, Ken Chukwurah, said, “The incident happened in a private lodge outside campus, which limits our control over who resides there. However, we are thoroughly investigating the matter to establish what happened and confirm the victim’s identity.”

Authorities are continuing efforts to contact the victim’s family as investigations progress.
