Unidentified gunmen launched a deadly attack on two communities in Imo State on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of a police constable and two members of a local vigilante group.
The tragic incidents occurred at the Isiala Mbano Local Government Headquarters and Obowo Police Station, where gunmen, according to eyewitness accounts, fired sporadically and damaged vehicles and structures in both locations.
In a statement to the press, Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the attacks. He revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, alongside leaders of various security agencies, has mounted a robust response to what is believed to be an assault by suspected members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN group. The attacks targeted the Isiala Mbano Local Government Headquarters and the Obowo Police Station.
ASP Okoye further explained that the assailants, numbering in the dozens, launched their assault by firing indiscriminately and throwing improvised explosive devices. Though security personnel fought back valiantly, the attackers managed to destroy several vehicles and parts of both the LGA headquarters and the police station before fleeing the scene.
Tragically, two vigilante officers were killed in the line of duty, and a police constable was brutally murdered in his home in Obowo.
“The deaths of these brave individuals highlight the immense risks undertaken by those who protect our communities,” Okoye said.
In response to the attacks, security forces have been deployed in large numbers, armed with enhanced operational tools to hunt down those responsible and bring them to justice. Okoye
