A member of the US Air Force passed away after self-immolating outside the Israeli embassy in Washington in protest of the war in Gaza, as confirmed by the Pentagon on Monday.
Emergency responders received a call regarding a person on fire outside the Israeli Embassy, and the Secret Service had already extinguished the fire upon their arrival.
The individual, wearing military fatigues, filmed himself shouting “Free Palestine” before setting himself on fire. Despite being transported to the hospital with critical injuries, he succumbed to them and passed away. The Israeli embassy stated that none of their staff were injured, and the individual was “unknown” to them.
The incident occurred amid increasing protests in the United States against Israel’s actions in Gaza, where it is engaged in a retaliatory war following an attack by Hamas militants on October 7.
The death toll in Gaza, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry, is nearing 30,000, leading to growing international pressure on the United States to intervene and call for a ceasefire.
