The United States has announced drug trafficking and terrorism-related charges against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

The announcement came after former President Donald Trump claimed that U.S. forces had detained Maduro following what he described as a “large-scale strike” carried out against the South American nation.

“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country,” Trump said on Truth Social.

“This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement.”

Trump further said he would hold a press briefing at 11:00 a.m. (1600 GMT) at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, where he is spending the final days of a two-week Christmas and New Year holiday.
