US makes U-turn, settle for Okonjo-Iweala for WTO top job after her opponent stepped down
The United States has finally resolved to support Nigeria’s Former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for World Trade Organisation (WTO) top job.
US president, Joe Biden, on Friday, officially endorsed her candidacy.
This is coming just as her only remaining contender, South Korea’s Yoo Mhung-Hee, recently stepped down from the race.
President Muhammadu Buhari, had in June 2020, withdrew the candidacy of Yonov Frederick Agah, Nigeria’s permanent representative to WTO, for the office of the Director General, and had him replaced by Mrs Okonjo.
Taking to her Twitter handle to thank the US President for his endorsement, Okonjo-Iweala, also congratulated Yoo Mhung-Hee of Rep. Korea for “a hard fought campaign”.
She tweeted;
“Grateful for the expression of support from the US today for DG WTO. Congratulations to Madam Yoo of Rep. Korea for a hard fought campaign.”
She added; “Thank You President Muhammadu Buhari and all Nigerians for your unflinching support. Thank you friends. Love to my family. Glory to God.”
