If truly love is an intense feeling of deep affection, music and sweet words are the reflection of the affection.
Love is in the air!
In spirit of Valentine’s Day, IDOMA VOICE compile a list of the most ‘honey’ Idoma love songs ever:
1. Ihotu by Bongos Ikwue
Bongos Ikwue’s soul-trapping number “Ihotu”, is one of the earliest Idoma love songs released in the 80s.
“Ihotu!
Ihotu loye fi’enwu.
Ihotu!
Ihotu lum leyi pu oh!
“Ola gwe’egere odigech’iyawu ogbamuda?”
The lyrics translates to “love is sweeter than honey, love has blinded me!”
‘Ola gwe’egere odigech’iyawu ogbamuda?’, literally translate to “nothing can stop me from going to my love”.
The lyrics was sampled by 2Face Idibia in “Yori Yori remix” by The Bracket.
2. Ameria by Benue Boy
Ameria is a wedding song and off course a love song by up and coming Idoma-born artist, Benue Boy.
The song was the first song to become a wedding anthem across Benue especially Idomaland after “I Do (Nlumwalum)” by Chris Morgan.
Benue Boy, though an underground artist, warmed his way into the hearts of every wedding planners and new couples who made his song their first choice at every wedding party then.
Another reason why the song became an instant hit at weddings, is the powerful and eulogizing lyrics.
“Wa ga m’oyia lum le,
Ameria lum bi’wole
Oyege yege lum le,
Ameria lum bi’wole.”
3.) Ihotu by Terry G Ft D’ Money
Nigerian commercial artist, Gabriel Oche Amanyi aka Terry G, made a special Idoma love song on his critically acclaimed debut album “Free Me”.
The song titled “Ihotu” featured his brother, Drizzle Money.
“Eko du m’mo
M j’oda n’oyum
Osugwu epey ah m’mi clano.
Eko du m’mo
Ihotu lum le lo che’lum mi clano” Terry G complains about the helplessness and pain of being trapped in love/crushing on some one that doesn’t know you exist or know you are crushing on them.
4. Odanaka by BlackFace
Nigerian veteran musician and member of the defunct pace setting Plantashun Boiz, Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo known by his stage name Blackface Naija or just Blackface, gave us one of the most fantastic Idoma love songs ever in his heartfelt number “Odanaka”.
The song has inspired a lot of love stories and produced marriages. It have also been used as soundtrack in many Idoma movies.
“Odanaka” still enjoys radio play across Benue especially Otukpo and Makurdi.
5. Ihotu by Queen Aisha
Aside the album eponymous track, ‘Ihotu’ was the most welcomed track off Queen Aisha’s “Apa State” album.
The song is a soulful unapologetic pure Idoma love song, completely rendered in Idoma language.
“Ihotu w’ola egidi
Oto yi no”
The above line from the song simply translate to “love is an unquenchable fire” – not just any fire but the wildfire of ‘egidi’.
6. Oyi by 2Face Idibia
‘Oyi’ by legendary Nigerian musician, 2Baba, is a feel-good song for lovers and ride-or-die to bop to.
“Oyi” means ‘Bestie” in the context of the song, so it is for sure the ideal song to vibe to with your friends and loved ones this season of love.
“Ah ah eh eh….oyi
Alo ma yego ligbo
So make we do de thing jeje, make we do de life show
Eya eh eh…oyi
Alo ma yo otukpo
So just be living ur life and do de thing jeje, life show”
