Vehicle conveying tomatoes, vegetables set on fire for violating sit-at-home order in Enugu

Hoodlums on Monday set ablaze a bus conveying tomatoes, vegetables and other foodstuffs to Enugu for allegedly violating the suspended every Monday sit-at-home order.

This came as residents have continued to stay at home, defying even the orders of Indigenous People of Biafra leaders who had severally but unsuccessfully tried to halt the action.

It was gathered that the vehicle, Ford brand, was set ablaze by people believed to be enforcing the erstwhile sit-at-home order at Edem junction, Ibeagwa, Nike, in the Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State around 5:45 am.

The vehicle was reportedly coming from the Ugwogo end of the Opi/Enugu bypass when it was blocked and set on fire.

Sympathisers were said to have put a call to the State Fire Service, prompting a quick response by the Ogui Road fire service station.

Enugu did not observe last Monday’s sit-at-home, though there was low traffic. However, a shootout was later that day reported at the Garki suburb of Enugu metropolis.

Sources told our correspondent that the shootout that last Monday may have forced residents to retreat and continue with the sit-at-home today.

The leadership of the IPOB had severally announced an end to the Monday sit-at-home, but some hoodlums insist that it must continue until Nnamdi Kanu is released.

Violent attacks on those disobeying the order has forced residents of most parts of the South East to continue with the order.

When the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, was contacted, he could not be reached at the time of filing this report.

The latest attack had brought to four buses conveying goods and foodstuffs that have been burnt, in addition to several tricycles allegedly destroyed by hoodlums for allegedly disobeying the sit-at-home order.
