Controversial activist and social media influencer, VeryDarkMan (VDM), has pledged to fund a new video for the protest track “Tell Your Papa” by veteran rapper Eedris Abdulkareem, following the song’s recent ban by the Nigerian government.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) announced the ban on Thursday, labeling the song “inappropriate and offensive.” Ironically, the move has drawn massive public attention to the track, which had previously flown under the radar.
In response, VDM condemned the government’s decision to silence what he described as a truthful expression of the country’s harsh realities.
Speaking in a video posted on his social media page, the activist said, “I went to Eedris Abdulkareem’s page and saw the message from NBC banning his song ‘Tell Your Papa’—a track where he calls on Seyi Tinubu to tell his father, President Bola Tinubu, that Nigerians are suffering.”
He continued, “So now they don’t want it aired because they know he’s saying the truth. Isn’t there hardship in the country? Aren’t people dying from insecurity?”
VDM criticized the federal government for attempting to control the media narrative and pledged to take the song to a wider audience through social media platforms.
“We don’t even rely on radio or TV anymore. Social media is where the real audience is. We’ll shoot a new version of the video—‘Tell Your Papa 2’—and I’ll personally fund and appear in it. We’ll even find someone who looks like the President since we can’t have him in the video,” he said.
He added that the new video will highlight broader national issues beyond the original song’s scope.
“This ban only proves the government hears the cries of the people but refuses to act. They just want to silence us. But we’ll make sure our voices are heard where they can’t be censored.”
