Liverpool Football Club, Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk has been officially named as the new captain, taking on the full-time leadership role after Jordan Henderson’s departure from the Reds.
The announcement was made on Liverpool’s website, confirming the defender’s elevation to the prestigious position. Alongside this, the club also revealed that Trent Alexander-Arnold will assume the deputy captaincy, succeeding James Milner in this role.
Speaking about his new responsibility, Van Dijk expressed his profound pride and joy, not only for himself but also for his family. In a statement to Liverpoolfc.com from Singapore, he shared his emotions about this momentous occasion.
“[It’s] a really proud day for me, for my wife, for my kids, my family. It’s been a special feeling, and I can’t really describe it at this point,” said the Dutch captain. “To be the captain of Liverpool Football Club is something that I can’t describe. It’s just something that makes me very proud, and I will do everything in my power to make everyone proud and happy with me and the football club.”
Van Dijk’s journey with Liverpool has been remarkable, making 222 appearances for the club since joining from Southampton in January 2018. In this time, he has been instrumental in guiding the team to numerous victories, clinching an impressive seven winner’s medals. His contributions were pivotal as Liverpool claimed major honors, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and FA Community Shield.
