A man identified as Wasiu Oyekan has allegedly beaten one of his neighbors, Ibrahim Lateef, to death over a sum of N4,500 in Ogun State. The incident occurred near Kobiti Central Mosque in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Reports suggest that the dispute began when Oyekan accused Lateef’s son and another boy of damaging his PlayStation video game while playing it in August. Oyekan demanded N9,000 to repair the game, and Lateef’s son’s father initially gave him N4,500 with a promise to pay the remaining amount later.
The delay in settling the N4,500 balance led Oyekan to take Lateef’s son to the police station on Sunday. When Lateef returned home and learned that his son had been taken to the police station, he confronted Oyekan. During the confrontation, Oyekan allegedly struck Lateef in the neck. Lateef fell to the ground, hitting his head, and began bleeding from his nose and ears. Tragically, Lateef passed away as a result of the incident.
The suspect, Wasiu Oyekan, is reported to be in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Police Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta. Lateef, also known as Tijuuku, left behind his mother, a wife with a two-month-old baby girl, other children, and younger siblings.
Upon hearing the news of her son’s death, Lateef’s aged mother reportedly fainted. The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident, and the case falls under the jurisdiction of the Divisional Police Officer of Oke-Itoku, CSP Hadiza Abu Oganyi.
