“We are ready for them” Frankfurt manager speaks ahead of clash against Real Madrid
Frankfurt manager Oliver Glasner has admitted the respect his side has for Real Madrid but said they do not fear the Spanish giants.
Europa League winners Frankfurt will go head-to-head with Madrid, who won the Champions League last season, for the Uefa Super Cup in Finland on Wednesday.
“We’re all really looking forward to the match. It’s the reward for our Europa League triumph last season that we can now play against Real,” Glasner told Omasports in a pre-match presser.
Madrid beat PSG, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool en route to a record-extending 14th Champions League title and appear favourites for the Super Cup.
Glasner, however, is aware of the test that awaits his side but noted that they are eager to show their worth.
“When you play against a team that beats the top three English teams Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea and then PSG to win the title, we know what to expect. We want to show them what we can do as well. We’re going into the game with a great sense of anticipation, but not fear.”
“And that’s what we showed last season in the Europa league. We saw that there’s always a chance, and we want to grab that chance tomorrow. We’re facing an extraordinarily good team but we know what we’re capable of.
“If we had the fear like you said, we wouldn’t have won the Europa League last season even though we lost league games. That’s why we would play with confidence because we know what we can do, but for sure we are are facing a very good team.”
Madrid lost the 2018 Uefa Super Cup 4-2 to then Europa League champions Atletico Madrid, and will be hoping to avoid a similar result on Wednesday.
