We have not scrapped JAMB as admission requirement – FG
The Federal Government has clarified that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) remains the official body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and coordinating admissions into tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
This clarification was made in a statement by the spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, who dismissed reports claiming that the government had abolished the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
“For the avoidance of doubt, JAMB remains the statutory and legally empowered body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and managing admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the statement read.
“The established admission processes through JAMB remain fully operational, and any contrary information should be disregarded in its entirety,” it added.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, reaffirmed the Ministry’s continued collaboration with JAMB and other relevant agencies to ensure transparency, fairness, and merit in the nation’s admission process.
He emphasized that the Federal Government remains committed to preserving the integrity of the tertiary education admission system.
The clarification followed widespread social media rumours suggesting that the recent review of admission criteria had eliminated the UTME.
The review, however, only allows candidates without a credit in Mathematics in their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) to be eligible for admission into programmes within the Faculty of Arts.
According to the Ministry, the reform aims to widen access to tertiary education and create more opportunities for prospective students.
