We met a broken Benue State, we’re fixing it — Gov Alia
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has assured Nigerians at home and abroad that the state is steadily recovering from years of insecurity, economic decline, and weakened institutions.
Speaking during the 2nd Virtual Town Hall with the Benue Diaspora, organized by the state’s Directorate for Diaspora Linkages and Investments, Governor Alia praised the diaspora for their continued engagement in the state’s development.
“We met a broken state, and we are fixing it. Rebuilding Benue is like healing an old wound, it takes time, patience, and collective effort. We are open to ideas, continuous learning, and active diaspora participation. Together, we can build a stronger and more prosperous Benue,” Alia said.
The governor highlighted key progress made since his administration took office. On security, he noted that violence, which previously affected 17 Local Government Areas, has been reduced to a few hotspots through collaboration with federal agencies and modern technology. Efforts have enabled the return of many Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), supported by N1.27 billion in interventions from partners including the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, UBA, DSS, and the Nasarawa State Government.
In education and healthcare, over 22 percent of the 2026 budget is dedicated to revitalizing schools and upgrading health facilities. On the economic front, key industries like Taraku Mills are being revived, soybean production strengthened, and local factories supported to produce juice, bread, and beverages, creating jobs and retaining economic value locally.
Governor Alia also cited ongoing infrastructure projects, including road networks in Makurdi and Gboko, the Wurukum flyover in partnership with the federal government, and initiatives to attract investors to Makurdi’s “Renewed Hope Estate.” Plans to support civil servants through a federal housing scheme were also highlighted.
Responding to questions from diaspora participants, Alia acknowledged governance challenges and differing public opinions ahead of the 2027 elections, but emphasized transparency and continuous engagement with the people as his administration’s guiding principle.
“We are steadily recovering, and our commitment to progress remains unwavering. We invite all Nigerians, especially the diaspora, to be partners in this journey,” the governor concluded.
