We met a tougher opponent – Aboubakar laments Cameroon’s defeat to Nigeria

Vincent Aboubakar, the captain of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, conveyed a sense of disappointment in the aftermath of the team’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Rigobert Song’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat to perennial rivals, Nigeria, in a Round of 16 contest, leading to their exit from the tournament.

Despite dominating possession in the match, the five-time champions failed to produce a shot on target. Aboubakar, who made his first appearance in the competition after recovering from an injury sustained on the eve of the AFCON 2023 finals, expressed his frustration with the outcome.

“The feeling can only be negative. Today we found an even tougher opponent. You know that Nigeria isn’t an easy team,” Aboubakar shared with reporters. “Cameroon dominated in terms of possession but small errors cost us the match. It’s football; there’s nothing we can do about it.”

Acknowledging the challenges faced by his team, Aboubakar emphasized the resilience needed to bounce back and prepare for future competitions. He concluded on a somber note, stating, “It’s sad that now we will be spectators of the AFCON,” highlighting the disappointment felt by the Cameroon squad as they exit the prestigious tournament.
