‘We regret supporting him’ – Northern elders dump Tinubu, reveal fresh plans for 2027
The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, has expressed regret over their support for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election, revealing plans for a different approach in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the spokesperson for the forum, disclosed this in an interview with The Guardian on Tuesday, emphasizing the region’s commitment to unity and consensus in selecting future presidential candidates.
Suleiman acknowledged that the North made a misstep in voting for Bola Tinubu in 2023 and indicated that such a mistake would not be repeated. He stated, “They have learned from their past error and will strive to choose a candidate capable of uniting the nation and governing in the best interests of all Nigerians.”
Looking ahead, the North intends to exercise caution in selecting presidential candidates, prioritizing individuals perceived as more inclusive, less controversial, and better aligned with the nation’s diverse regional interests.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured the highest votes from the region in the 2023 elections, defeating major contenders, including a Northerner, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Since his inauguration in May 2023, the president has faced significant criticism over certain policies of his administration, which the opposition labeled as anti-masses. Additionally, Tinubu has been accused by Northern groups of making lopsided appointments within the federal government.
