Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi, has announced that the federal government with arm personnel of the new-established Police Unit known as Special Weapon Tactical Team (SWAT) with AK-47 riffle.
SWAT was established following the disbandment of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS in October.
Speaking on Channels TV on Wednesday night, Dingyadi said, “Like I said earlier on, the syllabus (on training new SWAT team) is not anything different from what we used to train this kind of set. The syllabus is virtually the same. We are going to continue with the AK-47.
“What we are trying to do now, is in the course of the training, is to teach the SWAT trainees to ensure they appreciate the fact that they are there to protect Nigerians.”
IDOMA VOICE observed that AK-47, officially known as the Avtomat Kalashnikova, is a gas-operated, 7.62×39mm assault rifle developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov circa WWII.
It is the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov rifle family.
