Wealthy pastors should help, not exploit their members – Kumuyi

Pastor William Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, has called on Nigerian pastors to refrain from manipulating their congregations with teachings about seed sowing for financial prosperity.

IDOMA VOICE reports that Kumuyi made this appeal during a sermon at a Christian meeting on Friday, October 18.

He notes that pastors should instead assist their members, particularly those in need, such as widows, by providing genuine support rather than exploiting them through seed sowing practices.

Kumuyi expressed concern over the wealth accumulation of some church leaders at the expense of their congregants. He stated, “Elijah added value to those who were low, including widows who couldn’t repay him. That’s the essence of our anointing: to uplift those who are struggling and provide for the poor.”

He criticized certain preachers who take advantage of widows, saying, “In our nation, we often hear that if you sow this seed, the Lord will multiply it a hundredfold. We need to be honest. If you’re a preacher like that, let’s have a conversation. These widows often have very little left, yet we manipulate them, telling them to give what little they have.”

Kumuyi lamented that many widows, after giving their last resources, return home without the promised blessings, leaving them in dire situations. “We must examine the outcomes for those who have given everything as instructed by their prophets. Where are they now? How are they managing? How are their children faring in school, while the prophet already possesses millions?” he questioned.

He stressed that today’s preachers are growing wealthier at the expense of their church members, urging someone to speak out against this injustice. “We need to remind our prophets, preachers, and bishops that this is not how it should be. Just as Elisha provided supernatural support to suffering widows, we should also strive to help those in need, bringing glory to God,” Kumuyi concluded.
