The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has taken the decision to withhold the results of more than 130,000 candidates from eight states within Nigeria, citing issues related to financial indebtedness. According to Patrick Areghan, the Head of WAEC’s National Office, some of the most affected states include Zamfara and Niger.
This revelation was made during a press briefing held in Lagos on Monday. Areghan provided key details about the recently concluded examination process. The total number of candidates who registered for the examination reached 1,621,884, spanning across 20,867 secondary schools nationwide. Out of this figure, a total of 1,613,733 candidates actively participated in the examination.
As per Areghan’s statement, 1,476,565 candidates, accounting for 91.5 percent of the total, have had their results fully processed and released. However, the results of approximately 8.5 percent of candidates are currently undergoing further processing due to certain pending issues.
Areghan emphasized that the withheld results pertain to candidates from states that have yet to settle their financial obligations to the council. The results of candidates sponsored by these indebted states will remain on hold until the outstanding dues are paid.
Areghan clarified, “I am happy to announce that candidates who sat for the 2023 WASSCE and have no pending issue can access their results, including their certificates simultaneously.” He urged the indebted states to promptly settle their outstanding payments to ensure that affected schools and candidates can access their results in a timely manner.
