Why ASUU have no reason to resist IPPIS enrollment – Don

A lecturer at University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor Jonah Onuoha, has said university lecturers “have no ground to resist enrollment into the Integrated Payroll and Information System (IPPIS).”

Onuoha, the head of political science department at the university stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Nsukka Wednesday.

He urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to persuade its members to support the move to capture lecturers in IPPIS.

He said the integrated payroll scheme had assisted the federal government to tackle wage-related corrupt practices.
Onuoha said ASUU’s constant threat of strike had become worrisome as it was inimical to good governance.
He further said the union should support the scheme, especially with the government’s acceptance to capture earned allowances and sabbatical leave.
“Every employer has the right to devise genuine platform to pay his workers, it follows that any worker that is uncomfortable with such platform should resign.

“The IPPIS platform did not violate university autonomy, it rather strengthens it because its objective is to fight corruption,” he said.

The professor, however, urged government to exhaust all negotiation windows before taking decision on the issue.

“Government should not be too quick to apply no work, no pay policy on the lecturers,” he said.
Onuoha also commended the federal government on the closure of Nigerian borders, saying the decision was already checking entry of smuggled goods into the country.

“I believe the closure is to curtail smuggling of banned foreign products, illegal arms and infiltration of bad elements. The border closure does not violate ECOWAS treaty on free movement; Nigeria has the right to protect its national interest first.”
