Why bandits are now more vicious – Sheikh Gumi

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has attributed the escalating brutality of bandits to the government’s kinetic approach.

He advocated for dialogue with the bandits instead of ransom payments for victims’ release.

Gumi’s comments come in the wake of recent kidnappings in Kaduna State, with bandits demanding an exorbitant N40 trillion ransom.

Speaking on Arise Television, Gumi characterized the demand as a negotiating tactic, citing their actual expectation to be far lower.

He emphasized the necessity for a shift in the Nigerian government’s strategy toward banditry and terrorism, urging engagement over mere military action.

“I believe paying ransom isn’t the solution. Instead, we should engage these individuals, offering them hope. It’s disheartening that our leaders are just realizing the gravity of this situation; it’s not just criminality, it’s war. If Israel and Hamas can negotiate prisoner exchanges, why can’t we?”

Gumi stressed that the recent surge in banditry’s viciousness correlates with the government’s aggressive approach, which, in his view, has failed to address the root causes.

“The current trend shows bandits becoming more ruthless. This escalation is a direct consequence of the heavy-handed tactics, which lack a comprehensive strategy. Politicians discuss the issue, but there’s little tangible action. We need a more nuanced approach beyond mere combat; we need dialogue.”
