Why Court granted CBN’s request to freeze accounts of End SARS promoters

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s request to freeze the accounts of those linked to the #EndSARS protests has been granted by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

According to TheCable, Nigeria’s apex bank was given the go-ahead to freeze the accounts of 19 people and a public affairs company linked to the protests against police brutality in Nigeria.

A document sighted by the news publication showed that on Tuesday, October 20, CBN filed the request and was granted permission by the court on Thursday, November 5.

Recall that in the last few weeks, youths in major cities protested across the country calling for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police.

This development is coming after the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) explained why it seized the passport of a prominent EndSARS protester, Modupe Odele.

The NIS spokesman, Sunday James, on Thursday, November 5, explained that the seizure of Odele’s passport is part of the NIS’ routine border checks.

Odele, a lawyer and a member of the Feminist Coalition, had claimed she was restricted from travelling out of the country by NIS officials.
