It is no longer news that former Plateau Assembly Speaker, Nuhu Abok Ayuba was impeached by eight members of the House this morning after the Assembly Complex was barricaded by security agencies. However, what is new now is why and how he was impeached by few members of the House who didn’t makeup two-third of the requirement to happen, among other requirements for impeachment.
The Plateau House of Assembly Members on Thursday morning impeached the Speaker Rt. Hon Nuhu Abok Ayuba as the Speaker of the 9th assembly in the early hours of today.
Eyewitness account revealed that the few members arrived at the assembly complex in the hour of 5 am led by the APC executives to commence the impeachment process on the Speaker Rt. Hon Nuhu Abok.
However, this medium gathered that security personnel besieged the assembly complex allegedly on orders of top government functionaries.
It was alleged that the key kitchen cabinet members of Governor Simon were so desperate that they allegedly move the process of intense politicking and horse-trading that finally culminated in the impeachment of Speaker Hon Nuhu Abok for speaking to the governor Simon Lalong over incessant attacks and killing of Plateau citizens and standing with the people of Plateau.
The cold crises had rocked the APC causing division among the assembly members as the Speaker of 9th assembly is understood by this medium to have the backing and support of the majority of the Plateau Assembly members but things went sour when the incident of commuters who were brutally murdered along Rukuba road with several others injured.
It would be recalled among alleged sins of the Speaker was when he ordered the governor to implement some requirements of safeguarding the lives and properties of Plateau citizens, that didn’t go down well with the kitchen cabinet members as they began to mobilize for his quick impeachment, which finally happened today.
Also, it was gathered at the assembly today, some APC that was loyal to the Speaker was not allowed access to the assembly.
It was gathered that he unusual sitting on Thursday morning, was presided by the Deputy Speaker, Saleh Yipmong, and elected Yakubu Sanda (APC-Pengana) as the new speaker.
The eight members Universal Reporters learned that they gained access to the House as early as 6 a.m to execute their plan. They operated under the heavy presence of armed security personnel.
The lawmakers attempted to impeach the speaker on Wednesday night, but could not succeed and returned on Thursday morning.
Mr. Nanbol Daniel (PDP-Langtang North Central) had said that the impeachment would not hold because it did not follow the House Rules on the impeachment of the speaker and deputy speaker.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing Rukuba/Irigwe constituency in the state House of Assembly, Musa Agah has described the action of the lawmakers as “the height of illegality”
Agah said, “It was this morning (Thursday) that some few members rushed to the Plateau state House of Assembly as early as 6 am. You know the state House of Assembly is made up of 24 members and the constitutional requirement for the removal of the Speaker is 2/3 majority which is 16 members.
“So, eight lawmakers rushed to the Assembly this morning against the House rules that say that plenary commences from 9 am and even if there is going to be an extraordinary sitting, the Speaker is the one who is empowered to convene but that did not happen. When some of us got wind of what was happening, we rushed to the Assembly complex only to discover that Security operatives had barricaded everywhere. Some of us were stopped from gaining access to the Assembly complex while they also harassed others.
“While the confusion was going on, the eight members said they have passed a vote of no confidence on the Speaker and went ahead to purportedly remove the speaker.”
Pundits in the State believe ignorance and pride may also have helped to cost the Speaker the seat, as they didn’t do enough all this while, especially in using the media to fight back when he got the nod of the sinister move by the Lalong led government, as this would have led to his fighting a battle.“He ought to use the media so well rather than on banking on the media that covers the Assembly alone. Many already were among that celebrated his ouster as speaker.
