Why I chose Nigeria over England – Leicester City’s Ashleigh Plumptre

Ashleigh Plumptre, a defender for the Super Falcons, has explained why she chose to play with the Nigerian women’s national team.

Plumptre, who presently plays for Leicester City, claimed her family and background were crucial factors in her choice to transfer sides.

When she made her Super Falcons debut against Cote D’Ivoire in Abuja last month, the 23-year-old had a dream debut.

Plumptre was born in the United Kingdom and was permitted by FIFA to play for Nigeria in January.

“My purpose in football has changed as I have matured and my path has become a little bit different and the reason I play football has changed as well,” Plumptre told Channels TV of her decision to play for Nigeria.

“As much as I love playing football, I like to play for a purpose and a reason. I know the impact I can have by delving into my heritage more and representing the people I am always familiar with.

“As much as it is about football, it’s also about what I’m passionate about and what I can bring as a person.”

She added, “I am a quite smiling person, but when it comes to being on the pitch, I bring out my physical side. I guess that’s my Nigerian side.”
