Prof. Attahiru Jega, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has reaffirmed his stance that the President should not have the authority to appoint chairmen of the electoral body.
Jega made this argument during a two-day retreat organized for senators by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State on Saturday.
His statements come in the context of discussions on the Electoral Act of 2022, where he proposed amendments to clarify and strengthen some sections.
In his remarks concerning INEC’s leadership, Jega emphasized the need to divest the President of the power to appoint the Chairman and National Commissioners of INEC. This, he believes, would help ensure that the Commission operates without partisan influence.
Jega called for a thorough review of the law to ensure that all electoral disputes are resolved, and judgments are delivered before the date of swearing in.
