Why we suspended $300 helicopter landing fee – FG

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced on Friday the temporary suspension of the controversial $300 helicopter landing fee.

The decision followed objections from the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), who argued that the fee was detrimental to their commercial interests.

A statement from Odutayo Oluseyi, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development spokesperson, revealed that a committee has been established to address the concerns raised by stakeholders, with a report due by the end of June.

The statement reads: “Following a meeting with the AON executive regarding the collection of helicopter landing levies at aerodromes, helipads, airstrips, and other locations, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has temporarily suspended the enforcement of the levy collection granted to Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Ltd by the Federal Government.

“The suspension takes effect from May 30, 2024, due to calls for a review by industry stakeholders.

“In response, Keyamo has formed a committee comprising members from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and its relevant agencies, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), international oil companies (IOCs), and Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Ltd. This committee is tasked with examining the issues raised by stakeholders and submitting a report by the end of June 2024.

“Messers NAEBI Dynamic Concept Ltd had been granted the exclusive right by the Federal Government to collect these levies, a decision that has raised concerns about the appropriateness of the charges. The committee’s recommendations will provide a way forward.”
