Georgino Wijnaldum, a former Liverpool star, has joined the Italian club on a loan with a purchase option, giving Roma another significant catch in the ongoing summer transfer market.
The contract details of the midfielder, who joins Roma on a season-long loan with a $8 million buyout option from Paris Saint-Germain, has officially been submitted to the Serie A offices. If Roma make the Champions League at the conclusion of next season and Wijnaldum participates in 50% or more of the games throughout the season in all competitions, the buy option will be triggered.
The 31-year-old was reportedly eager to facilitate the summer transfer to Roma. The terms of the contract will see Roma cover 50% of his salary, with PSG agreeing to cover the remaining €7 million salary plus €3 million in bonuses for Wijnaldum’s one-year loan in the Italian city. Roma will pay the Dutchman a salary of about €5 million.
The midfielder only played 1,651 minutes of football in Ligue 1 after transferring to France because he was unable to secure a permanent slot in the star-studded PSG midfield.
The seasoned athlete was a target for Jose Mourinho, who is well acquainted with the player’s qualities from his time coaching in the English Premier League. He might now consider the former Newcastle United player to be Roma’s starting centre-midfielder for the upcoming season.
