Winger Akinkunmi Amoo’s contract terminated by Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus

Akinkunmi Amoo, the former Golden Eaglets winger, has officially terminated his contract with Omonia Nicosia, a Cypriot First Division club. Amoo, who initially began his career with Nigerian grassroots club Sido’s FC, later joined the Swedish club Hammarby on June 8, 2020, for a transfer fee of €200,000 following his standout performance in the 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Tanzania.

After a season and a half, he moved to FC Copenhagen in Norway for a transfer fee of €4.30 million. Unfortunately, Amoo faced challenges in Norway, including injuries and off-field controversies, preventing him from establishing himself at the club. These controversies included allegations of sexual assault and frequent injuries.

In response to the off-field issues and fitness concerns, the 21-year-old Nigerian forward departed FC Copenhagen for Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus on September 13, 2023. He signed a three-year contract with the Cypriot First Division champions, set to keep him at the club until June 30, 2026.

Despite the expectations, Amoo struggled to make an impact at Omonia Nicosia, featuring in only six matches across all competitions as a forward, without registering a goal or assist since joining. On March 2, 2024, both parties mutually agreed to terminate their relationship, leaving the Nigerian international currently without a club.
